Behind every exam result is an examiner. Each summer, thousands of examiners dedicate hours of their time and expertise to ensuring that young people’s work is marked fairly. Yet, the process is not without its challenges, and one area that continues to emerge is the impact of technical issues during the marking period.
As both a multi-professional researcher and a school leader, I am passionate about the integrity of assessment. My background includes completing a Doctorate in Education at UCL, with a focus on educational assessment, as well as the National Professional Qualification in Headship (NPQH) and a Master’s in Educational Assessment from UCL, Institute of Education. These experiences have shaped my belief that assessment is a public endeavour; it must be transparent, fair, and trusted.
However, when examiners encounter ongoing technical issues, confidence in the system is eroded. If examiners do not feel supported, then the reliability of the process and ultimately young people’s outcomes are at stake.
That is why I am gathering examiner experiences through an independent, anonymous survey. This survey is not linked to any exam board, no confidential materials are requested, and completing it does not breach examiner contracts.
The findings will be shared:
- Directly with exam boards
- With schools and professional communities
- In an academic/professional article
The aim is simple: to ensure examiner voices are heard, and to advocate for improvements where they are most needed.
If you marked exams this summer, I would be grateful if you could take a few minutes to share your experience here by clicking the link below:
